Gunner Joseph George Gale.    Born about 1890 in Wandsworth, London, the son of John and Alice Gale. His father was a Lighterman. He was baptised on the 11th January 1891 at St Faith’s Church, Wandsworth and the family were living at 13 Bridgefield Grove, Warple Way, Wandsworth. By March 1901 they were living at 18 North Place, Wandsworth. His father died when he was about 11 years old and by April 1911 he was a General Labourer. He joined the Royal Garrison Artillery, service number 42866, and was attached to ‘W’/6th Trench Mortar Battery when he was Killed in Action on the 7th September 1916, aged 27 years, and is buried in Grave VII.A.10 at the Flatiron Copse Cemetery, Mametz, Somme, France. He was posthumously awarded the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
