George Linton

George Frederick Linton was born on 20 October 1895 the third of the six children of George Frederick Linton (1860-1920) and Eliza Rose Linton née Norton (1864-1945). His birth was registered in the Holborn registration district and his father was a carpenter.

On 23 June 1895 he was baptised at St Matthew's Church, City Road, Islington and the baptismal register shows the family living at 15 Cottage Lane, Islington. The 1901 census confirms he was still living there with his parents and four siblings: Jane Rose Linton (1891-1974), David John Linton (1894-1977), Henry James Linton (1897-1964) and Edith Mary Linton (1901-1925).

In the 1911 census he is recorded as a shop assistant living at 5 Turners Place, Hoxton, with his parents and the same four siblings as recorded in the 1901 census.

He enlisted as a Rifleman in the Rifle Brigade (The Prince Consort's Own) at Shoreditch, service number S/8689, and was attached to their 9th Battalion when he was killed in action, aged 21 years, on 22 August 1917. He was buried in Plot 1, Row F, Grave 2, in the Perth Cemetery (China Wall), Maaldestedestraat, 8902 Ieper, Belgium.

By 17 January 1918 his parents were living at 32 Turners Place, Hoxton, when his father received his army effects totalling £7-5s-10d and on 9 February 1919 his father was sent his £11-0s-0d war gratuity. He was posthumously awarded the Military Medal (M.M.) for gallantry in the field, the 1914-1915 Star, the British War Medal 1914-1918 and the Victory Medal.
