War dead non-military, WW2 i

Commemorated on a memorial as being a civilian who was killed in WW2. Includes mercantile marines and emergency services personnel.

Charlotte Hurry

Charlotte Storey was born on 3 August 1900 in Haggerston, the fifth of the six children of Jonathon Storey (1872-1940) and Elizabeth Storey née Lawrence (1872-1908). Her father was a bricklayer's labourer and her mother was a chair maker.

The 1901 census shows her living at 29 Dunston Road, Haggerston, with her parents and three of her siblings whilst in the 1911 census she is shown as a schoolgirl living at 38 Dunston Street, Haggerston, with her parents and three siblings.

On 30 May 1920 she married John Edward Hurry (1894-1956) at All Saints Church, Haggerston and the marriage register shows his occupation as a carman. They had nine children: Elizabeth L. Hurry (1920-1965), John Edward Hurry (1923-1988), Lillie C. Hurry (b.1925), Irene E. Hurry (b.1927), Elsie R. Hurry b.(1928), Thomas George Hurry (1931-2004), Joyce E. Hurry (b.1932), Leonard J. Hurry (b.1934) and William T. Hurry (b.1936).

Electoral registers from 1929 to 1939 show her and her husband listed at 7 Witchampton Street, Hoxton, and this address is confirmed in the 1939 England and Wales Register in which she is shown living with her husband who is described as a scrap iron and metal labourer together with their daughter Elizabeth L. Hurry, a tailoress of child's hats & coats and their son John Edward Hurry (junior), a bedstead and spring labourer.

She died, aged 40 years, on 26 August 1940 and her death was registered in the Shoreditch area. She was buried on 31 August 1940 in Newham.

Apart from being mentioned on the Holy Trinity Church war memorial as having died in an air raid, nothing can be found to confirm this. Her name is not recorded in the Civilian War Dead Roll of Honour which is usual for those who lost their lives in such circumstances.
