One-time (including June 2020) chair of Newington Green Action Group, which worked with Mary on the Green, the campaign to erect a statue commemorating Mary Wollstonecraft on Newington Green. In 2016 Burrows was Joint Equalities Officer of Hackney NUT. Married Richard Rieser c.1987.

In interview Burrows' actor daughter, Saffron, said this "My mum has taught in Hackney for over 30 years. She's a strong trade unionist; she was president of the Hackney NUT. My stepfather, Richard Reiser, was general secretary of the Inner London Teachers' Association in the days of Ilea and the GLC. They're both still part of the rank and file group within the NUT. My father is a primary school teacher and still teaching in Devon."
