Oarsman and rowing coach. Born Stephen Fairbairn at Toorak, Melbourne, Australia. Studied at Jesus College, Cambridge and was called to the bar in 1886, but did not practise. He rowed in four university boat races, but his fame rests on his method of training crews to slide in their seats to facilitate leg-drive. Died at the Mostyn Hotel, Portman Square.
