John Fleming

Co-founder National Sporting Club. Manager of The Pelican Club (opened in Gerrard Street, 1887) until it failed in 1891. He then joined with Bettinson to open the National Sporting Club. See there for more information.

In John Harding's 2016 book 'Lonsdale's Belt: Boxing's Most Coveted Prize' Fleming is described as "... ‘a fairly disreputable character with no particularly endearing qualities’ who had previously managed various public houses in the city." but where the quote comes from is not specified.
