Born Whatlington, near Robertsbridge, Sussex as Barbara Leigh Smith. Painter and women’s activist. Married the physician Eugène Bodichon in 1857. She set up the English Women’s Journal and led the feminist ‘Langham Place Group’. Died ‘Scalands Gate’, Robertsbridge, Sussex.
