15th (County of London) Battalion, The London Regiment (Prince of Wales' Own Civil Service Rifles)

Categories: Armed Forces

1,240 members fell while serving with the regiment in the Great War.

The battalion has served in several guises over the years including as the 21st Middlesex Rifle Volunteers (Civil Service Rifles) at Somerset House in 1860. Initially its companies were based on the various offices in the building: 'A' - Audit Office, 'B' and 'C' - Post Office, 'D' and 'E' - Inland Revenue.

In 1908 it was formed as a Territorial Force battalion in The London Regiment.

On 31 December 1921 the battalion amalgamated with the 16th (County of London) Battalion, The London Regiment (Queen's Westminster Rifles) to form the 16th (County of London) Battalion, The London Regiment (Queen's Westminster and Civil Service Rifles). It evolved to become the 16th London Regiment (Queen's Westminster and Civil Service Rifles) in 1922. Then, on the break-up of the London Regiment in 1937, it became the Queen's Westminsters, The King's Royal Rifle Corps.
