This was one of four mediaeval boundary crosses marking out one hundred acres of the old town of Croydon. The others were called Hand Cross, Hern or Hurn Cross and Stay or Stake Cross. Two of the crosses were believed to have been located in elm trees. They had all disappeared  by the late 1600s.
