Leading Telegraphist James Herbert Dougherty.    Born in 1902 in Woolwich, London, the son of James Edward and Amy Ellen Dougherty. His father was a Clerk and they lived at 281 Woolwich Road, Charlton. In 1932 he was living at 54 Cathles Road, Balham, London, and the following year he was living with his wife at 47 Ribblesdale Road, Streatham, London. In October 1934 he was appointed as a Postman in the London Postal Service and in October 1935 was promoted to Sorter. He had joined the Royal Navy, service number C/J77759, and received the Royal Fleet Reserve Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. He served on H.M.S Auricula, a Flower Class Corvette and died on war service on the 17th May 1941, aged 39 years. He was buried on the 22nd May 1941 in Sec 2. Row 6. Grave 29. at the Durrington Cemetery, Findon Road, Worthing, West Sussex. Probated was granted to his widow, Florence Amy Dougherty of Harrow, Middlesex. Effects £1040.
