This was one of four mediaeval boundary crosses marking out one hundred acres of the old town of Croydon. The others were called Hern or Hurn Cross, Stay or Stake Cross and one of unknown name. Two of the crosses were believed to have been located in elm trees. They had all disappeared  by the late 1600s.
