Soldier. Born Douglas Walter Belcher in Surbiton. He enlisted at the beginning of WW1 and fought at the second Battle of Ypres. Whilst in charge of a portion of breastwork (a temporary fortification), and under heavy bombardment he maintained his position, and opened fire on the enemy who were relatively nearby. His actions almost certainly averted an attack on the flank of one his divisions. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions.
