Memorial

People of London People of London

Monument: People of London

Erection date: 11/5/1999

Inscription

{Inscribed on the top, in a spiral:}
In war resolution, in defeat defiance, in victory magnanimity, in peace goodwill.

{Inscribed on the outer edge:}
Remember before God the people of London 1939 - 1945.

Cut from a single block of Irish limestone. The quote was used by Churchill but actually written by Sir Edward Marsh in relation to WWI.
This commemorates the 30,000 Londoners who died in air raids. It was funded by readers of the Evening Standard which launched an appeal tied in with the 50th anniversary of VE Day in 1995. Unveiled by the Queen Mother.
Information from the magnificent "Public Sculpture of the City of London" by Philip Ward-Jackson.
For our close-up picture we have, unusually, used one from the sculptor's website showing the memorial when it was new and shiny.
