Royal Air Force fighter pilot and PE teacher. Born Sydenham, lived in Lewisham most of his life. Aged 18, joined the RAF and flew Spitfires and Hurricanes. When he left the RAF he taught at Turnham Primary School (now Turnham Academy) for 30 years, where he was also a football referee and coach and ran the school football teams.

Promoter of the Sunday School movement. Born and died Gloucester.
The school was founded 1688. This building was constructed in 1709 and was used by the school until 1926. Purchased by the National Trust in 1954 who use it as a gift shop and information centre.
Boarding School. First mentioned in 1813, but probably built some years before that. Its most famous pupil was Edgar Allan Poe, who was educated there from 1817 to 1820.
