Civil engineer. Born in Enfield. Chief engineer of the Metropolitan Board of Works and so creator of the London main drainage system and the Embankment. Great-great grandfather of Sir Peter, the television producer behind 'Big Brother' and other such masterpieces of popular TV entertainment. Died at his home in Wimbledon.
