Ballet dancer and choreographer. Born Frederick William Mallandaine Ashton in Guayaquil, Ecuador. He studied under Léonide Massine and Marie Rambert, and was chief choreographer to Ninette de Valois, from 1935 until her retirement in 1963. He is widely credited with the creation of a specifically English genre of ballet. Died at his home, Chandos Lodge, Yaxley, Suffolk.
