Robert Burns was born on 29 December 1921, the eldest of the four children of Robert Burns (1885-1926) and Ellen Burns née Taberman (1889-1931). His birth was registered in the Shoreditch registration district.
When his parents married on 25 September 1920 at Holy Trinity Church, Hoxton,the marriage register shows his father's occupation as a metal spinner and their address as 8 Shaftesbury Street, Shoreditch.
The 1939 England and Wales Register confirms that he was living at 8 Shaftesbury Street, together with his maternal aunt, Mary Taberman (1884-1955), and his younger brother, William J. Burns (b. 26 October 1924). His occupation was recorded as a bench hand - printing, whilst his brother was an errand boy.
He was injured during a German air raid on 9 September 1940 at Wenlock Brewery, Wenlock Road, Shoreditch and died, aged 18 years, on 13 September 1940 at the Homoeopathic Hospital, Great Ormond Street, Holborn. (Now called the Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine).
He is also commemorated on the Civilian War Dead Roll of Honour, located near St. George's Chapel in Westminster Abbey, London.
