Nelson Mandela

Anti-apartheid revolutionary, politician, and International elder statesman. Born in a village near Umtata in the Transkei, South Africa. Gaoled 5th August 1962, sentenced to life imprisonment 12th June 1964 for his actions against apartheid. Released after 27 years' imprisonment, 11th February 1990. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, 10th December 1993. Inaugurated President of the Republic of South Africa and its Government of National Unity, 10th May 1994.

We know of five visits to London: his first in1962 to garner political support; 1990-1 when he appeared in a Wembley Stadium concert named for him; 1996 when he visited Brixton; 2000 when he visited the LSE, and 2003 when he unveiled the First & Slovo plaque.
