Dame Lucie Rie

Categories: Craft / Design

Countries: Austria

Potter. Née Gompertz in Vienna into a rich, intellectual family. 1938 she and her husband fled Nazism intending to go to the USA but Lucie, already more interested in her work than her husband, decided to stay in London alone. Do Google her work - it is lovely and delicate compared with that of Bernard Leach, another big name in pottery at the time. Died at home, Albion Mews.

The photo shows Lucie Rie in 1987 at her front door. It is (c) Jim Hair and we thank him for the photo.
