Countess Mountbatten of Burma

Vicereine of India and director of emergency relief services. Born Edwina Cynthia Annette Ashley at 32 Bruton Street. A leading member of London society, she married Lord Louis Mountbatten in 1922. The marriage was unconventional and she was rumoured to have had multiple affairs, some with prominent people, including in the 1930s, Paul Robeson, although it is now thought to have been the popular entertainer Leslie Hutchinson. After the independence of India, she worked for many charitable organisations. She died at Jesselton, North Borneo, and was buried at sea off Portsmouth.
