Sir Herbert Baker

Architect. Born and brought up in Kent, trained as an architect in London. 1892 went to South Africa where he gained many important commissions. During a brief return to Britain in 1904 he married. In 1912 he went to India where he worked with Lutyens on New Delhi. Back in Britain from 1913 his London work includes: South Africa House in Trafalgar Square; India House in the Aldwych; the rebuilding of Soane's Bank of England; London House, many with his partner, Scott, one of the four principal architects of the Imperial War Graves Commission - see Blomfield for the others.

Went on to work in Kenya, France and Australia. Died in the family home where he was born, Owletts, in Kent. This is a National Trust property and can be visited.
