1,240 members fell while serving with the regiment in the Great War.

The regiment was formed at Somerset House in 1860. Initially its companies were based on the various offices in the building: 'A' - Audit Office, 'B' and 'C' - Post Office, 'D' and 'E' - Inland Revenue.
