<![CDATA[Fountains Abbey Public House]]> http://www.londonremembers.com/memorial/1866
Fountains Abbey - Paddington W2 Paddington has always adequately provided hospitality for travellers in the form of local ale houses. The Fountains Abbey opened in 1824 and has been a popular meeting house from the early days. Sir Alexander Fleming was a loyal regular to the Fountains Abbey. Legend says that it was mould spores from this ale house which blew through Fleming’s window, leading him to the discovery of Penicillin in 1928. The Fountains Abbey derived its name from two different sources, "Fountains" marks nearby sites of early known springs and wells which were of great importance to inhabitants, "Abbey" stems from Westminster Abbey which possessed the manor of Paddington during Saxon times hence the name "Fountains Abbey".]]>

<![CDATA[Quakers - Memorial Buildings]]> http://www.londonremembers.com/memorial/1541
Memorial Buildings These buildings stand on part of the Old Bunhill Fields Burial Ground. The first freehold possessed by London Friends, used by them for burials during nearly two hundred years, it was closed to such purposes in 1855. In 1880 The Metropolitan Board of Works purchased parts of the property for widening streets from which, and also from the site of these premises, all remains of interments being first carefully removed were re-interred in the ground adjoining. And out of the proceeds of such compulsory sales these buildings with their halls, coffee-tavern club and committee rooms have been built. Near this spot George Fox was interred in 1690, previously Edward Burrough and some ninety other martyr Friends who died in London prisons had been buried here. To the memory of these ancient worthies and for the furtherance of religious, moral and philanthropic objects are these buildings now dedicated by The Society of Friends in London {in the hope} thereby to promote the best welfare & happiness of the surrounding population. London, 10, Mo., 1881. {We believe that the date means "10th month", i.e. October.}]]>

<![CDATA[Longest tunnel]]> http://www.londonremembers.com/memorial/1260
British Waterways London Legging the longest tunnel At 960 yards (878 metres) long, the Islington Tunnel is James Morgan's greatest engineering achievement. To 'leg' a boat through, two boaters lay on their backs on planks laid across the bows. Then they 'walked' along the sides of the tunnel, inching the boat forwards with their feet. Getting through the tunnel was also an achievement for early boaters, as there was no towpath. This meant they couldn't use their horses. Heritage Lottery Fund]]>
